What Is Agua de Melon?

Melon water is a flavor of the many Mexican Aguas Frescas. It’s all natural and only sweetened if the fruit isn’t already jam packed with natural sweetness.

A variety of ripe fruits are used to make many different flavors of beverages. This one is made of fresh cantaloupe.

Originally to make, the fruit was muddled by hand, and though that method can still be done, we use kitchen blender to make this sweet drink quickly.

If you prefer tangy teas try our Agua de Jamaica, or a limonada like Strawberry Lime Agua.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quick List: Water, cantaloupe, sugar (cane or white), and ice.

Half of a fresh Cantaloupe with Seeds on a wood surface with granite in background.
  • 10 cups of water
  • ½ a large ripe cantaloupe
  • ½ cup sugar
  • Optional: ice

Ingredient Notes / Variations

  • Shop cantaloupe at your local grocery store in the fruit and produce section. Some stores also sell pre-cut cantaloupe, for quick fresh fruit that’s easy, pero for an agua, that’s pricey.
    • Source a whole melon and allow it to ripen for a few days for naturally sweeter results.
    • The sweeter the melon, the less sugar you’ll need to use.
  • Sugar used is cane or white sugar. If you’re using rock/raw or coconut sugar, it’s best to add the sugar to the blender with the melon to assist with breaking it down.
    • If you’re using sugar substitutes, apply sugar as needed in the final step since it’s much finer and will easily absorb.
    • The sweeter the melon, the less sugar you’ll need to use.
  • Ice If not consuming right away, place it in the refrigerator once recipe is made to chill.
    • Avoid diluting melon water with the ice.
    • The larger the ice cubes, the better. A helpful tip for those looking for max-flav!

How To Make Agua de Melon

To make the agua fresca

NOTE: Original blender or modern are both ok for use in making this agua fresca.

  1. Prep melon. Peel, de-seed, dice in chunks to fit your blender. And pre-mix optional sugar/water (6 cups) in a pitcher of your choice.
  2. In the blender, combine diced melon with 4 cups of water and blend until smooth. About 30 seconds.
  3. Strain the melon water for no pulp. Otherwise you can pour it straight into the pitcher pre-mixed with sugar (optional).

Pro tips / Receta Notes

Servings: 10 cups of agua fresca.

Storing: Keep refrigerated. Proper storage of beverage with lid in refrigeration. Give a light stir to mix contents before serving. Drink within 3-4 days for best taste.

Strainer optional: The drink is blended until smooth. Feel free to blend for longer to breakdown as much cantaloupe pulp as possible or use a strainer for no pulp. This recipe does not strain the melon beverage.

Instructions

  • Fill a large pitcher with 6 cups of water and sugar, and mix until dissolved.
  • In a blender, add 4 cups of water and cantaloupe. Blend until liquified.
